CHAPTER EIGHT

The Case of The Miraculous Ear

As tired as she was, Penny was too excited to sleep. At 6 a.m. she went back to the stable yard before any of the other children or staff were around.

She was greeted by lots of different voices all whinnying, ‘Good morning, Princess Penny.’

Penny gave a graceful curtsy and a huge giggle went up. Anyone who could not speak Equalese would not have heard a thing as Equalese is on a much higher frequency than human speech. They would only have seen the ponies silently flaring their top lips and raising their heads.

‘I’ve got something important to tell you,’ said Penny. As she explained about the Devliped plot, the ponies stood listening with their ears pricked and their eyes bulging. ‘It’s OK,’ continued Penny. ‘I’m going to stop it happening but I’ll need your help from time to time.’

They all agreed but had to confess they were very worried. Except for Hob, who laid his ears back and snapped at Waggit in the stable next door.

‘I’d like to be a Devliped,’ he said.

The other ponies glared at him.

Penny went into the feed room to start the morning feeds, accompanied by the usual bangs and snorts coming from the stable yard. But today she heard various voices shouting, ‘Hurry up, Pen, I’m starving!’, ‘Go easy on that horrible cod liver oil’ and ‘Please can I have extra pony nuts today?’

‘Thank you, Pen,’ said each pony as she delivered the feeds.

Henry arrived. ‘What has got into them all?’ she said.

Later Penny brushed out Patch’s long brown and white forelock. It had become very tousled during last night’s adventure.

‘Hey, Pen,’ he said between mouthfuls of feed. ‘When can we try out Equiballet and Equibatics? I’m dying to impress the others.’

‘We might need to very soon,’ said Penny.

She told him about what she had seen and heard in the lorry park early that morning. Patch nearly choked on his pony nuts.

‘That’s really scary!’ he said. ‘What are we going to do?’

‘We have to work out some way of getting the Pony Brats to leave Fetlocks. Maybe I’ll be lucky and I’ll be able to use my gifts to get their parents to take them out of school before they sit their A tests,’ said Penny.

In fact Penny did not have that long to wait.

She was just coming out of her biology class when Sam, Pip and Dom met her in the corridor.

‘You’ll never guess what,’ said Pip. ‘Carlos has had a fight with Benjamin F-F!’

‘He caught him bashing the little Argentine mare over the head with a polo stick again,’ added Dom. ‘Carlos took it off him and clouted him with it. Benjamin’s in the infirmary with a big cut on his left ear!’

‘Lord Fry ’em Fitzpain has been informed, of course, and he’s on his way down here from London. Benjamin’s sworn to get Carlos kicked out of school. He wants him arrested for grievous bodily harm!’ said Sam.

‘I wish it was Benjamin F-F for the chop. The boy’s a snob and a bully.
